The venue

The setting

The brasserie occupied a former village inn in Aughton, a suburb of Ormskirk with its own Merseyrail station. A regional pub group bought it as its seventh site. Other buyers had looked at turning it into housing or a convenience store, but the new owners chose to keep it as a food-led pub.

It reopened in spring 2015 as a brasserie, serving food from breakfast to evening, seven days a week: a lunch club menu, coffee and cake, cocktails and a 'bronze wine wall', with seafood brought in each morning from the Lancashire coast. The menu ran from lobster and Champagne to pies and pints. The brasserie has since closed.

The look

A French brasserie, in red leather and dark timber

At its launch the interior was described as inspired by the relaxed style of French eateries: a bronze bar, gold light fittings, antique and convex mirrors, oak floors and black and white chequerboard tiles. The seating had to sit comfortably in that setting without fuss.

Deep red buttoned leather runs along the wall as fixed seating, the classic brasserie banquette, and cross-back bistro chairs have red leather seats on dark timber frames. Against grey tongue-and-groove panelling and cream walls, the red reads as warm rather than showy, and a timber settle by the window keeps a touch of the old inn.
