The Gryphon Room, Malvern College
Malvern College sits on the slopes of the Malvern Hills. Its newly refurbished Gryphon Room now seats up to 220 guests, so the college needed school dining furniture that could serve pupils every day and impress at events.

Bespoke farmhouse tables in solid ash
We supplied 250 chairs and 40 tables across the Gryphon Room and a smaller private dining room, including 26 bespoke farmhouse tables in solid ash, as well as extra tables for one of the boarding houses.
The centrepiece of the Gryphon Room is a run of long farmhouse tables. We made each one to the college's visual, with a 25 mm solid ash top on a solid beech frame. Each top measures 2438 mm long, so we added a fifth central leg for extra strength, and every table sits on industrial castors with brakes. That way, staff can clear the floor for an event, then lock each table firmly back in place.
Next door, we chose 50 Joyce side chairs in Sunbury Nappa Aquaclean, a navy faux leather that wipes clean easily, at solid ash tables on black Profile bases.

Furniture on this project
One room, many roles
The Gryphon Room is a dining hall for pupils during term. Through Malvern College Enterprises, it also hosts conferences, summer schools and private events, so the furniture had to be tough, yet still look the part.
The brief called for school dining furniture that would seat large numbers while keeping a warm, traditional feel, stand up to three meals a day in term time, move easily so the room can change for events, and suit both the main hall and a smaller private room. Next door, that private dining room seats around 50 guests, with deep green panelling and a geometric floor setting a more formal tone.
Natural timber, honest finishes
We kept the Gryphon Room light and natural. Solid ash tops and clear-lacquered beech chairs let the real grain show through, while matte black frames add definition.
In the private dining room, navy faux leather brings a touch of colour, and the warm ash tables tie the room back to the Gryphon Room.

How the scheme came together
The Gryphon Room: the college's visual and the finished room
The college's visual set the look: long farmhouse tables in pale timber on dark frames, with spindle-back chairs. We made the tables to it, with a fifth central leg and castors with brakes so the room can be cleared for events.

The private dining room: the college's visual and the finished room
The visual shows navy chairs at pale tables against green panelling. We matched it with Joyce side chairs in a navy faux leather that wipes clean, at solid ash tables on black Profile bases.
